Pogba puts United on top

Paul Pogba gave his team a much-deserved win that propelled them to the top of the table. This is the first time Manchester United has been at the top of the table after the turn of the year since Sir Alex left in 2013. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves more credit having guided his side to this great milestone. It is worth noting to see Darren Fletcher on the technical Bench of United.

It was a tough contest for United considering that Burnley was playing a defensive game, however, United were well armed with their striking force with the inclusion of Edinson Cavani who had returned after his three-match ban for alleged racial utterances on social media.

The match marred by VAR controversies and Drama; the first notable incident was when Robbie Brady tripped Cavani denying him a clear chance to score on a counter-attack, this would have easily resulted in a red card for Brady who was booked. However, the decision was overturned after a VAR check and Luke Shaw of United was booked for a foul he committed in the build-up of the counter-attack.  The second notable controversy came after United Skipper scored a superb header, which was ruled out as a foul. This was arguably an outright goal that was denied.

Nick Pope performed well with notable saves to deny Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, and Edinson Cavani some brilliant goal-scoring chances but Paul Pogba got the better of him with an excellent shot that gave United the 3 deserved points. The build-up to the goal was superb with a brilliant display of soccer and coordination from Bruno and Rashford. Burnley pilled pressure on United’s goal in the last few minutes but this yielded to nothing. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

This was the first away clean sheet for The Red Devils and a very important win that put them in a good position ahead of their match with Liverpool on Sunday 17th January 2021. United are now three points clear from Liverpool.  Burnley remains in position 16 with 16 points from 16 games played.
