How to File Taxes Online – FILE RETURNS (KRA) – EMPLOYMENT

We have provided a step by step procedure on how to file taxes online for free for those who are employed ( Employment Income).

We have also included some images of the itax portal to help you with filing the returns. Kindly note that the deadline for filing the returns is on the 30th of June of every year. Remember you will be filing returns for the previous year. The period for filing returns is from January of the current year to 30th June of the same year. You can file your returns at anytime during the stated period. In summary KRA has given you 6 months to file your returns. Failure to file your returns on time will attract a penalty of at least KES 2,000 per year.

Procedure to File Taxes Online for Free (Employment Income) – FILE RETURNS (KRA) – EMPLOYMENT

  1. The first step to file taxes online is to open your browser and go to https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/
  2. LOGIN (where it is written Enter PIN/User ID *). Enter your KRA PIN, click Continue. Enter Password and Security Stamp ( answer to arithmetic sum) and Click Log In. If you have forgotten your password, you can always reset by clicking on forgot password/unlock account.
  3. Go to Returns Menu Go to Returns Menu and select ITR For Employment Income Only
  4. Enter Return Period , select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Do you have employment income?’ and Click ‘Next’
  5. Fill in Return Information Under basic information, answer the questions asked appropriately and Click ‘Next’
  6. Confirm details of Employment Income Go to Section F, details of employment income and confirm the name and PIN of employer, Gross Pay and other allowances as per your P9 form.
  7. Confirm details of PAYE deducted Go to Sheet M, details of PAYE deducted, confirm Employer details, Taxable salary, chargeable pay, Tax payable on taxable salary and PAYE deducted. You can modify your detail as per your P9 form.
  8. Enter details of Income Tax Paid in Advance Go to Section Q and capture a payment if any, made prior to the filing of the return
  9. Tax Computation Go to Section T, Tax Computation, Enter defined/pension contribution amount (as per your P9 actual contribution by employee) and personal relief. Click ‘Submit’ and download the E-return acknowledgment receipt
